The trade between the Toronto Raptors and the Los Angeles Clippers can’t proceed until the end of NBA investigation into the Clippers about whether they circumvented the salary cap is completed.
It seemed that Kawhi would return to the place where he won an NBA title in 2019, in his only season with the Raptors. However, the trade has stalled, which was supposed to send Brandon Ingram, Gradey Dick, as well as unprotected first-round draft picks in 2031 and 2033, a 2027 first-round pick swap, and two second-round picks to the Clippers.
In the statement provided by the Clippers to ESPN, it is mentioned that the trade “can only be finalized if the Raptors’ ownership group assumes the risk of penalties related to Kawhi’s contract that could theoretically result from the ongoing investigation.”
On the other hand, the Raptors claim that they “remain eager to bring Kawhi back to Toronto and look forward to a swift resolution for our players, our organization, and our fans.”
The NBA investigation into the Clippers centers on Kawhi Leonard and is examining whether the Clippers circumvented the salary cap by funneling money to Leonard through his $28 million endorsement deal with the green banking company Aspiration, which also had a $300 million, 23-year sponsorship agreement with the team.
Recently, due to all this, Joe Sanberg, whom the Clippers claim deceived them, was sentenced to 14 years.
