Giannis Antetokounmpo meets Miami Heat culture: “All that matters is winning”

The introduction of Giannis Antetokounmpo to the Miami Heat on Thursday felt less like a standard press conference and more like a franchise-altering celebration. Gathered Heat supporters greeted the Greek superstar with thunderous chants that echoed through the arena, forcing a brief delay to the afternoon’s scheduled events.

“I haven’t done this in a while,” Giannis reacted.

Flanked by head coach Erik Spoelstra and team president Pat Riley, the 31-year-old forward was presented with his new number seven jersey, moving away from the number 34 he wore during his iconic 13-year tenure with the Milwaukee Bucks. The decision to switch numbers was a deliberate gesture of reverence toward his roots.

“The reason that I really changed my number is that I feel like number 34 holds so much weight, it has so much history, and out of respect to the organization that drafted me and played for 13 years, I decided to leave that number there and try to start a new chapter,” he explained.

He viewed the change not just as a marketing shift, but as a crucial emotional milestone for his transition. “Hopefully, I could leave my mark in Miami and make number seven as legendary as number 34,” he added. “It’s kind of like having a closure for me, mentally and emotionally, because that number meant a lot to me.”

The magnitude of the acquisition was not lost on the front office, which parted with a massive haul of young talent and draft capital to secure the multi-time MVP earlier this month. “We hope that Giannis can be here for the rest of his career,” noted 81-year-old Riley.

Antetokounmpo, who arrived in South Florida on Wednesday afternoon, wasted no time adapting to his new home. Before even stepping in front of the microphones, he visited the home locker room and immediately hit the floor for a brief, individual practice session.

When he finally spoke to the media, he made it clear that Miami’s notorious reputation for intense dedication was a primary driver for this new chapter.

“From the first years I played in the NBA, I always had huge respect for the Miami Heat organization. Around the league as players, we always talk, and we always share about the Miami Heat culture: that guys work hard, are very disciplined, very driven, and very selfless, giving everything they can to win games. And I was always curious what made them so unique,” mentioned Giannis.

The Athens native spent his entire NBA career in Wisconsin after being drafted 15th overall in 2013. While he achieved ultimate success there by capturing the championship in 2021, he acknowledged that the Heat’s standard of excellence was something he long admired from afar and tried to emulate.

“With the Bucks we tried to kind of recreate that,” he added. “All that matters is winning. And everybody leaves the people that they love behind for the common goal, which is to win.”

“The best place”

Giannis expanded on his relentless drive, underlining that his personal goals perfectly align with the high expectations of South Florida.

“I enjoy basketball. I enjoy the challenge. I enjoy getting better. Obviously, I accomplished a lot of things in my career, but one of my goals is to win another championship,” he said. “Whenever I put my mind to do something. I usually accomplish it. And I feel like this is the best place for me to do that. So, I’m excited for it.”

Antetokounmpo was not the only newcomer welcomed on Thursday, as the Heat held a similar introductory event earlier in the day for Bobby Portis Jr., who arrived in the same blockbuster trade. Portis echoed his teammate’s sentiments, emphasizing that their bond is forged entirely through a shared obsession with glory.

“The conversations I had with Giannis have just always been about winning. Where can we go to win? How can we get another championship?” stressed the 31-year-old forward.

With these acquisitions complete, the Heat lineup instantly transforms into one of the most formidable and imposing units in the NBA. Spoelstra expressed immense excitement about pairing his new championship-proven veterans with the existing roster.

“We feel like we bring an edge and a physicality tour front court,” shared 55-year-old Spoelstra on adding Portis and Giannis from the Bucks.
