Born in Badalona, 43-year-old Fernandez started coaching at 15. He worked local jobs before grinding through player development and coordinator roles in the NBA, eventually becoming the league’s first Spanish head coach in 2024. At the international level, he served as the head coach of the senior national team of Canada in recent FIBA tournament, following assistant stints with Spain and Nigeria.
Heading to the 2026–27 Regular Season, Fernandez faces a massive rebuild with a heavily global blueprint. The Nets currently features one of the most populated international rosters in the league. They have Russia’s Egor Demin, Israel’s Ben Saraf and Danny Wolf, France’s Nolan Traore, and Germany’s Moritz Wagner. It is a diverse coalition mirroring his own journey of blending different cultures into a cohesive unit.
The immediate test lies just ahead. Brooklyn is set to fine-tune team chemistry against the Charlotte Hornets, Philadelphia 76ers, Washington Wizards, and Miami Heat during the NBA Preseason 2026. These matchups serve as the runway before they officially tip off the Regular Season at Barclays Center against Charlotte on October 21.
For Guardiola, the meeting reinforces a long-standing appreciation for the NBA. He is a documented basketball enthusiast who frequently attends games to draw strategic inspiration. Seeing a fellow Catalan break barriers marks another connection bridging the two sports.
