An update on Jakob Poeltl was among the focal points for the Toronto Raptors during Bobby Webster’s preseason press conference on Thursday.
Back issues limited the starting center to only 53 games last year, and he frequently didn’t look to be 100% even when he was active. The seven-foot Austrian struggled to move with his usual fluidity, leaving a massive void in the paint. However, the Raptors executive vice-president and general manager expects a bounce-back year. He expressed optimism that his big is healthier this fall after spending a needed summer overseas.
“Yak looks good,” said 42-year-old Webster. “Time will tell as far as we ramp up to training camp, but you’ll see he’s good spirits, good shape. Anyone can appreciate that going home is good for anyone, and I think he’s come back with the motivation and willingness to keep his body as healthy as he possibly can.”
Aside from the center’s health, management covered several basketball operations topics. Webster touched on the roster’s financial structure, noting that the front office has plenty of flexibility to make future adjustments. He also voiced confidence in the young talent on the roster.
Now, the focus shifts to the court. The team coached by Darko Rajakovic launches training camp next Monday, followed by a five-game exhibition schedule to help the Serbian tactician iron out his rotations and test different defensive looks. It all builds toward the real test on October 21. That night, the Raptors open the 2026–27 NBA Regular Season at Scotiabank Arena against the Chicago Bulls.
