Alpha Diallo is beginning his NBA career at 29, looking to turn his success in Europe into a place in the Denver Nuggets’ rotation. After five seasons with Monaco, the reigning EuroLeague Best Defender brings defensive versatility and experience to David Adelman’s squad.
The move also marks a homecoming for Diallo, who grew up in Colorado and attended Denver West High School. His immediate challenge is to learn Denver’s system and contribute around Nikola Jokic, with cutting, floor spacing and open shots central to his offensive role.
“I think my all-around game will show as the season goes on,” Diallo said, per BasketUSA. “I can bring a lot of different things. It will depend on what the coaches need me to do.”
Defense remains his strongest calling card, and he believes the fundamentals that served him in Europe will translate.
“You have to put pressure on the ball, move your feet, stay between your opponent and the basket, and contest shots,” he explained.
Diallo also sees something familiar in Adelman’s approach.
“I would say he’s a little like a European coach. He’s very intense. He pushes players, but he also knows how to encourage them.”
NBA opponents may still be unfamiliar with him, but Diallo hopes that changes quickly.
“When I’m assigned to guard someone, if they don’t know who I am, hopefully they’ll find out very quickly.”
