After beating the Phoenix Suns at Frost Bank Center in NBA Preseason 2026 action on Wednesday, Victor Wembanyama talked about his growth and team chemistry.

During his postgame press conference, the French center was asked about his defense and being named Defensive Player of the Year for the 2025–26 Regular season. Wemby remains self-critical.

“DPOY means being the best defender on the planet,” he noted. “I got a lot of growth to do in that respect.”

The two-time All-Star credits his coaches for keeping him grounded.

“I have coaches that hold me to a very high standard,” he explained, dismissing media praise. “Now the standard isn’t being the best on the planet anymore. It’s being better than last year.”

His preseason play shows this focus. He is averaging 13.7 points, 6.0 rebounds, 3.3 assists, 2.3 blocks, and 1.0 steals per game.

Wembanyama was also asked about perimeter shooting. When questioned on his belief in the Spurs starting group, he offered a clear response. “Just as confident as last year,” he declared. “Nobody got worse.”

The Spurs finish their exhibition schedule against the Sacramento Kings at home on Friday. After that, the real games begin next Thursday. They will host their regular-season opener versus the Oklahoma City Thunder.

Selected with the first overall draft pick in 2023, Wembanyama has fully confirmed initial projections. Committed to continuous growth, he has logged 203 games in the league, including 22 during last year’s spectacular run to the NBA Finals.
