A ceremonial NBA Cares event scheduled to take place at Shanghai was canceled by Chinese officials, per the Associated Press. NBA commissioner Adam Silver said that the league will still honor its promises surrounding the event including gifting new computers to the education center of the Chinese city.

Aside the above cancellation, CCTV decided to abort plans of showing the friendly games between the Los Angeles Lakers and the Brooklyn Nets, which are scheduled to take place at Shanghai on Thursday and Shenzhen on Saturday. The preseason games themselves might be ultimately canceled, reports the New York Times.

The recent developments add on the fallout from Daryl Morey’s support for protesters in Hong Kong. The GM of the Houston Rockets sank both his team and the NBA as a whole into a complicated situation with a post on Twitter, he later deleted. Initial reactions from China’s side might prove just the tip of the iceberg for the NBA.
