The draw of the Olympic basketball tournament is on the books and Victor Wembanyama who is preparing for his senior national team debut in a major tournament, explained that there’s only one result for France at the games played in the country.

As Wembanyama said speaking to French media in San Antonio: “Any other result than the first place would be a failure since we could have done better. You shouldn’t have any regrets but it’s a very achievable goal”.

As he explained: “I much prefer to face their best team than their second or third team. Facing them in the final or the group stage for me, it’s the same”.

Speaking about the draw, which sent France to the same group as Germany, Japan, and the winner of the qualifying tournament in Latvia, the Spurs rookie added: “We have a group which is a potential trap. But these are the Olympics: if we want to go far, we will inevitably have to play against the big guys”.

And after missing the recent World Cup, Wembanyama wants to make a splash in the Olympics: “I have an idea of the mark I want to leave. I want to make history with big goals and soon with big achievements”.

With Wembanyama projected to be a starter on the team, which will include NBA veterans Rudy Gobert, Nicolas Batum, and Evan Fournier, France despite a disappointing presence in the recent FIBA World Cup, where they couldn’t make it past the group stage, is considered one of the favorites for a medal in the Olympics.

It remains to be seen, if this medal can be the gold.
