Serbia saw Puerto Rico coming back from down 19 points in the fourth period before taking a 58 – 55 to begin the 2024 Olympic Games Women’s Tournament.
Puerto Rico trailed 55 – 36 at the beginning of the fourth quarter and then made a 0 – 14 run. After going scoreless for seven minutes, Serbia made it 57 – 50.
Jacqueline Benitez drained two free throws to bring Puerto Rico at a shooting distance, 57 – 55 but that was the last her team scored in the game. Dragana Stankovic pulled off a big defense with a block on Pamela Rosado and then hit 1-2 as her team got the victory.
Stankovic finished with 15 points and 10 rebounds while Jovana Nogic had 14 points plus and seven assists for Serbia.
Trinity San Antonio dropped 11 points for Puerto Rico.
Earlier, Spain defeated China 90 – 89 behind 29 points and eight rebounds by Megan Gustafson. Leonor Rodriguez contributed 25 points to the win.
Yueru Li posted 31 points and 15 rebounds for China.
