A shark attack on Eleonora Boi, the wife of former NBA player Danilo Gallinari, occurred in Puerto Rico.
Boi, who is expecting a child, was swimming when she was bitten by what experts believe may have been a shark, as announced by the Department of Natural and Environmental Resources on Thursday. She suffered an open wound on her thigh, but is in stable condition and undergoing treatment in a nearby hospital.
Officials did not initially release the name of the 39-year-old victim for security reasons, but Carolina Municipal Police commissioner captain Ruben Moyeno confirmed it is Gallinari’s wife and that she is also pregnant, per Daily Mail via El Nuevo Dia.
The couple is in Puerto Rico, since 36-year-old Gallinari is playing for Vaqueros de Bayamon in the Baloncesto Superior Nacional. His side is currently preparing to face Leones de Ponce in a best-of-seven championship series with Game 1 scheduled to take place in the Ruben Rodriguez Coliseum on Sunday.
Looking to wrap up his international career, Gallinari has also been called up to play for Italy in the upcoming EuroBasket 2025. The plan is to join teammates and head coach Gianmarco Pozzecco in training camp after the BSN Finals 2025.
Italy sits in Group C of the preliminary round, and will challenge Greece, Georgia, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Spain, and Cyprus in Limassol between August 28 and September 4. The top four seeds advance to the knockout stage, to be played in Riga between September 6 and 14.
