Real Madrid are reportedly closing in on the appointment of Pedro Martínez as their new head coach, according to MARCA, although the club has yet to officially clarify Sergio Scariolo’s future.

The report states that Madrid are prepared to pay Valencia Basket a €1 million release clause to secure Martínez, who is expected to sign a three-year contract worth just over €1 million per season.

The 65-year-old coach is coming off a historic campaign with Valencia, leading the club to its first-ever EuroLeague Final Four appearance before winning both the Endesa Supercopa and the Liga Endesa title.

If completed, the move would mark Martínez’s first stint in charge of either Real Madrid or Barcelona. During his long coaching career, he has led clubs including Joventut, Manresa, Gran Canaria, Baskonia, Estudiantes and Girona.

According to MARCA, Madrid’s decision was influenced by the attractive brand of basketball Valencia played under Martínez, making him the club’s preferred candidate to replace Scariolo.
