Rytas has dismissed head coach Giedrius Zibenas. The decision of the Vilnius outfit was announced on Monday.
After capturing the Basketball Champions League Season X, powered by Ameresco SUNEL, title, a disappointing exit in the Playoffs of Lithuania’s Betsson LKL marked the end of the 42-year-old tactician’s tenure.
Per the press release: “Rytas Vilnius has made the decision to part ways with head coach Giedrius Žibėnas following the end of the 2025–2026 season.
Having joined the team as an assistant coach in the 2020–2021 season, Giedrius took over as Rytas head coach in January 2021. During his time in charge, he led the team to two Lithuanian Basketball League titles, three runner-up finishes, and in 2026 guided the club to its first-ever FIBA Basketball Champions League trophy.
The club thanks Giedrius Žibėnas for his work, energy, dedication, and significant contribution to the team’s recent history and the growth of the community.
“Giedrius left a very strong mark on our club. During his time here, the team achieved important victories, won titles, and wrote one of the brightest chapters in the club’s history. We are sincerely grateful for everything he gave to Rytas,” said Artūras Jomantas.
We understand the context of how the season ended, the reaction from our fans, and the responsibility that lies with the club. The way the season finished did not meet either our own standards or the expectations that our community had every right to hold. Nevertheless, the organisation’s goals and ambitions remain unchanged — Rytas will continue to grow, get stronger, and compete for the highest goals. The club is already beginning the search for a new head coach and will aim to make this decision as soon as possible. More information on the club’s decisions and upcoming changes will be provided in the near future.”
