Czech basketball is set for a major transformation after ERA Basketball Nymburk and SK Slavia Praha Basketball announced a merger that will see the two organizations unite their sporting, business and marketing operations.
The project aims to create a club capable of competing at a higher level in Europe while bringing top-level basketball back to Prague.
Nymburk, the dominant force in Czech basketball over the past two decades, will contribute its winning tradition and experience on the European stage, while Slavia brings a historic brand, a growing fan base and strong youth development programs.
As part of the merger, the club will move to Prague, a decision Nymburk ownership described as difficult but necessary for future growth.
“To continue competing on the European stage, attracting quality players and providing facilities that meet modern professional standards, the move to Prague is a necessary step at this stage,” said owner Jiří Podpěra.
The club also emphasized that Nymburk’s identity will remain an important part of the new project.
Owners Jiří Podpěra and Tomáš Petera pointed to the rapidly changing landscape of European basketball as a key factor behind the decision, highlighting the need for stronger organizations capable of adapting to future developments, including discussions surrounding NBA Europe.
Longtime Nymburk executive Ladislav Sokolovský will serve as general manager of the new organization, which plans to combine sporting success, youth development and a modern fan experience under one umbrella.
