Thomas Walkup wants to play the 2023 World Cup with Greece

As confirmed by Eurohoops sources, Thomas Walkup has officially requested to play with Greece in the 2023 FIBA World Cup.

The 30-year-old personally requested in a letter to participate with Dimitris Itoudis’ national team to the next International campaign, also committing to sending his passport back if he refuses to play once called up. His request has been forwarded by the President of the Greek Basketball Federation Vangelis Liolios to the Ministry of the Interior and is being examined.

The federation has already made a positive recommendation.

It looks like now it’s only a political matter if Thomas Walkup will have the opportunity to step on the court with the white-and-blue national team, as both the Minister of the Interior and the President of the Republic need to sign his request.

If the Texas native will obtain the Greek passport, he will fall into the same category  with Tyler Dorsey, Naz Mitrou-Long, and Elijah Mitrou-Long who have Greek origin. Only one of them can play in the same competition with Greece.

Thomas Walkup has been playing with Olympiacos since the summer of 2021 and his contract extension until 2027 has been recently officially announced. The former Zalgiris Kaunas playmaker has been averaging 7.9 points, 2.8 rebounds, 5.9 assists, and 1.9 steals in this year’s EuroLeague.
