Achille Polonara is set to begin his coaching career after obtaining his coaching license and accepting a role as an assistant coach with Avellino Basket in Italy’s Serie A2.
The news was first reported by La Giornata Tipo, with Polonara ready to take his first steps on the sidelines just months after announcing his retirement from professional basketball.
The 33-year-old stepped away from the game in May while battling acute myeloid leukemia, bringing an end to a career that saw him compete at the highest level of European basketball. Before that diagnosis, Polonara had also overcome testicular cancer, returning to the court during the 2023-24 season in another remarkable display of resilience.
Over the course of his playing career, Polonara represented several EuroLeague clubs, including Baskonia, Fenerbahce, Anadolu Efes, Zalgiris Kaunas and Virtus Bologna. He also enjoyed a successful international career with Italy, appearing at the Tokyo Olympics, two EuroBaskets and the 2023 FIBA World Cup.
Although illness prevented him from returning to the court as a player, Polonara’s passion for basketball remains unchanged. Beginning next season, he will start a new chapter as a member of Avellino’s coaching staff.
