Usman Garuba’s NBA buy out set at €3 million

Usman Garuba is projected to be picked in the lottery at the upcoming NBA draft and this would also mean a record-breaking buy out for Real Madrid.

To be exact, the Spanish power house will get a total of three million euros to release Garuba, as Donatas Urbonas of “basketnews.com” reported first and Eurohoops sources confirm.

This is a new record number for a draft prospect after the two million euros buyout set by Real Madrid in the case of Luka Doncic. However, the number can’t be considered surprising since Madrid recently got a six million euros buy out for releasing Facundo Campazzo who joined the Denver Nuggets.

This kind of NBA buy out policy is the norm for Real Madrid, and should be the norm for European clubs.

The NBA franchise which will pick Garuba can pay up to $750.000 for a buy out and the rest of the money will come from the player’s salary. The two sides are expected to negotiate a payment plan in instalments in order to accommodate the possible wish of the player to move to the NBA.

Considering of course the rookie salary scale that defines the exact contract each player gets depending on the number he is picked, if Garuba falls out of the lottery, then the three million euros buy out may complicate his move from Europe to the NBA.
