Chicago begins search for new leadership following major front office shake-up
Billy Donovan has stepped down as head coach of the Chicago Bulls after six seasons, according to ESPN.
Despite the organization expressing a desire to keep him following sweeping changes in the front office, Donovan chose to exit by exercising an option in his contract. The decision came after a series of meetings with team ownership over the past week, as both sides agreed on a clean break.
Donovan, who coached the Bulls since 2020, compiled a 226–256 record and led the team to just one playoff appearance. Chicago missed the postseason for the fourth consecutive year in 2025–26, prompting significant organizational changes, including the recent dismissal of executive vice president Artūras Karnišovas and general manager Marc Eversley.
A member of the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame Class of 2025, Donovan has spent 11 seasons as an NBA head coach, including a successful five-year stint with the Oklahoma City Thunder, where he made the playoffs every year.
The Bulls have already launched a search for both a new head coach and a top basketball executive, with multiple candidates expected to be interviewed in the coming weeks.
