NBA commissioner Adam Silver revealed that the league plans to introduce an AI-powered system for out-of-bounds reviews in the future, aiming to remove objective calls from the hands of referees.
Speaking on The Pat McAfee Show, Silver explained that the NBA wants to implement technology similar to Hawk-Eye, already used in tennis and MLB, where cameras around the court would instantly determine possession without delays or coach’s challenges.
“We’re going to move to a system like that where that whole category of calls will be automatic,” Silver said. “It’ll be instantaneous, it’ll be automatic. Just play on.”
Silver added that removing objective decisions from referees would allow officials to focus more on judgment calls involving contact and fouls.
“There’s often contact on every play,” Silver explained. “It doesn’t mean there’s a foul. They’re trying to judge how much that contact affects the play.”
The commissioner also addressed the ongoing debate about flopping, drawing a distinction between exaggerating contact and fully deceiving referees.
“I think players are taught to sell calls these days,” Silver said. “But there’s a difference between exaggeration and truly fooling the referees.”
