The Denver Nuggets face a complex offseason as they attempt to bolster the roster around Nikola Jokic.
Front-office executives must navigate stringent salary cap restrictions while simultaneously managing the future of breakout forward Peyton Watson. Although the organization initially planned to match any outside offer sheets for the restricted free agent, a significant gap in contract negotiations has altered their approach. As reported by Sam Amick for The Athletic on Sunday, they are very open to sign-and-trade scenarios. However, acquiring matching player salaries in a potential deal triggers strict financial limitations, creating a tough puzzle for management to solve.
Adding to the offseason intrigue, recent rumors indicate that the Nuggets are considering an ambitious pursuit of unrestricted free agent LeBron James. Pairing James with Jokic would unite two of the most brilliant playmakers in league history. Compounding the drama, both James and Watson are represented by Rich Paul of Klutch Sports Group, giving the agent distinct leverage in reshaping Denver’s roster dynamics.
Expected to bypass a contract extension this summer, Jokic is maintaining pressure on the front office. The Serbian superstar intends to play out the upcoming 2026–27 season under his current contract, which pays him over $59 million. While the former champion and perennial Most Valuable Player maintains a long-term commitment to remaining in Denver, delaying his extension serves a dual purpose. Financially, waiting until next summer allows him to capitalize on a rising salary cap and secure an even bigger historic contract next summer. Strategically, the move forces the Nuggets to remain aggressive in building a championship contender.
