The race for NBA Europe’s London franchise is heating up, with the family that controls Tottenham Hotspur competing against the club’s former chairman Daniel Levy.
According to Sky News, the Lewis family has partnered with the Checketts and Eccles families to submit an offer for the proposed London basketball team.
The group brings significant experience in professional sports. David Checketts has held senior positions within the NBA, while his family has been involved with Real Salt Lake, the St. Louis Blues and Madison Square Garden. The Eccles family has worked on major sports venues and projects linked to the Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City.
Levy is reportedly involved in a separate consortium with Liberty Global and MSP Sports Capital, creating an intriguing battle between Tottenham’s owners and their former chairman.
London is considered one of the most valuable franchise in the planned NBA-backed European league, with its price estimated at around $1 billion. Other proposed locations include Berlin, Manchester, Milan, Munich, Paris and Rome.
The NBA and FIBA have received bids from football club owners, private equity firms and other major investors. The first franchise deals could be completed in the coming weeks as plans for the new competition continue to take shape.
