The Cleveland Cavaliers are gearing up for the 2026–27 NBA Regular Season, and head coach Kenny Atkinson has high expectations for newcomer Mario Hezonja.
Speaking during a media session on Friday, the 59-year-old tactician addressed the press before the players take center stage for Monday’s official media day right before training camp.
The 31-year-old Croatian combo forward bounces back in the NBA after previously playing 335 games with the Orlando Magic, Portland Trail Blazers, and New York Knicks before returning to Europe in 2021. Atkinson believes his development overseas has primed him for a successful return. “I’ve heard how he has played these last five years,” he said. “I think he’s going to surprise some people. I’m excited.”
The Cavs play-caller emphasized the unique value brought by the Dubrovnik native. “You always want that, where is there gonna be an outside spark from somewhere,” Atkinson added. “I love that we took a different path to obtain a player with the experience and credibility he has. And I think to get the player at the right time in his career. Sometimes it’s about, obviously, a tremendously talented player, but when you get that person in their career at the right time.”
A major key to his anticipated success is a physical transformation, compared to his previous NBA stint. “He gives us a physical presence,” continued Atkinson. “He’s 255 pounds. He’s changed his body. Still has his skill and his speed, but a much more powerful player, which I think fits in today’s NBA with all the switching and stuff. So, he’ll be able to punish switches. Just really excited where he’s going to fit in this puzzle, but very impressive so far.”
With the former EuroLeague champion firmly in the mix for a spot in the rotation, the Cavs will play three preseason games. They will open the Regular Season against the Philadelphia 76ers at Xfinity Mobile Arena on October 22.
