Dallas Mavericks icon Dirk Nowitzki has opened up about his current relationship with the franchise, revealing that recent organizational shifts have paved the way for a potential return. Speaking on DLLS Sports with veteran NBA insider Marc Stein, the legendary German forward addressed his distance from the team while expressing optimism about the future under newly appointed team president Masai Ujiri.
Nowitzki candidly acknowledged that he had intentionally stepped away from the team following a series of front-office decisions that he did not support. “Everybody knows that I pulled back there for a while. There were some things done that I didn’t agree with, and I kind of just pulled back from the franchise,” he explained, confirming a period of detachment that had concerned the fanbase.
However, the arrival of Ujiri has completely altered the dynamic. The two share a long-standing mutual respect, which has already sparked preliminary talks regarding the Hall of Famer rejoining the fold in some capacity. “I know Masai for a long, long time. We’ve already had some discussions on what’s going to transpire in the future, and he obviously wants me to be a part of the Mavericks,” revealed 48-year-old Nowitzki.
While the door is wide open for a reunion, the former NBA champion noted that his demanding schedule prevents an immediate return. “I think all these things are very early and very soon. Of course, I have my job as an analyst, and with FIBA I’m on the board, so I travel a ton, so there’s nothing really imminent here in the near future. But I’ll always be, as we know, a Maverick for life,” he added, reassuring fans that his heart remains in Dallas.
