The civil legal proceedings against Los Angeles Lakers legend and former Panathinaikos guard Byron Scott have been put on hold after he filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy protection. The latest update on the three-time NBA champion was recently relayed by the Los Angeles Times.
The petition in the United States Bankruptcy Court-Central District of California triggered an automatic stay that temporarily freezes all state tribunal matters. The litigation, originally scheduled to begin in early September before being delayed to October 12 due to a scheduling conflict, is now facing an indefinite postponement.
According to the document, the incident occurred during the summer of 1987 in a locked janitor’s closet at Campbell Hall School in Studio City, where Scott and other athletes were filming an instructional basketball video. Dylan was a 15-year-old student at the time, while the veteran scorer was a 26-year-old married player. Scott has admitted to having intimate contact with the plaintiff but maintains that he believed she was over 18 and had no knowledge of her minor status.
Dylan’s legal team fiercely condemned the bankruptcy filing, with her attorney, Kerry Garvis Wright, labeling the move a ‘pathetic and cowardly’ attempt to avoid trial and escape legal accountability.
While Campbell Hall School recently reached a confidential settlement with Dylan, Scott’s courtroom battle remains unresolved. The plaintiff’s attorneys have announced plans to file a motion requesting the presiding judge to lift the automatic stay. If granted, the request would allow the underlying assault action to return to state jurisdiction and proceed to a verdict as initially planned.
