Victor Wembanyama addressed his influence beyond basketball when speaking to reporters in San Antonio on Thursday morning, on the sidelines of a Spurs practice.
With France’s next presidential election approaching next spring, the French big man was asked about his position as a young Black athlete with considerable public influence.
Wembanyama acknowledged the responsibilities that come with his platform while explaining how his privileged surroundings shape his experience.
“That gives me a lot to manage and understand. Being young and Black isn’t something that affects me every day. It has an impact on many people, but not within my privileged social circle,” Wembanyama said, per Maxime Aubin.
The Spurs star believes he will eventually have a role to play in addressing those broader issues. For now, however, he is focused on his own development before taking on greater responsibilities.
“Will I have a role to play in the future in that regard? Yes, I’m sure of it. But today, I’m building myself as a person first, and I consider myself fortunate not to be too caught up in those responsibilities.”
