A few hours after a losing effort against Anadolu Efes in Game 3 of the Semifinals in the Turkiye Sigorta Basketbol Super Ligi Playoffs 2026 on Friday, Fenerbahce Beko’s director, Cem Ciritci, called out officiating in a public statement issued on Saturday morning.

“Following last night’s game between Anadolu Efes and Fenerbahce Beko, we must address not only the final score but also how the game was officiated.

When a basketball game features 83 free throws, 66 team fouls, and constant stoppages, the issue extends far beyond mere physical competition. In such a scenario, the refereeing standards, the criteria for contact, and the overall impact of these decisions on the flow of the game must naturally be called into question.

Especially in a critical, playoff-level matchup, the rhythm of the whistles directly dictates player minutes, team rotations, the psychological momentum of the game, and the ultimate balance of the series. Therefore, simply stating that ‘fouls were called on both sides’ is an entirely insufficient explanation. The real issue is not the statistical equality of foul numbers on paper, but rather when those fouls were called, what types of contact triggered them, and which standards were applied.

The fact that Mikael Jantunen, Nicolo Melli, and Khem Birch all fouled out from Fenerbahce Beko’s frontcourt rotation raises serious questions regarding how the contact standard in the paint was enforced. Were the same whistles blown for identical contact on both ends of the floor? Were the criteria truly equal for both offense and defense? Were foul calls, offensive fouls, non-calls, and unsportsmanlike foul reviews handled with the same level of scrutiny during critical moments?

The public deserves clear transparency regarding the criteria used to evaluate the plays that directly disrupted the flow of the game and decimated Fenerbahce Beko’s rotation, most notably, the hard contact that resulted in Melli’s injury. At this elite level, a whistle is never just a whistle; it directly impacts player safety, a team’s collective sacrifice, and the ultimate fate of a championship series.

Fenerbahce Beko is not demanding special privileges.

Our request is clear and absolute:

  • The same whistle for the same contact.
  • A unified standard in clutch moments.
  • Officiating that safeguards fairness, rather than allowing excessive physicality.

The spectacle that unfolded last night must be thoroughly reviewed by the Turkish Basketball Federation’s Central Referees Committee. In particular, critical foul decisions, the criteria for unsportsmanlike conduct, the enforcement of post contact, and the consistency of the calls in the final stretch must be explained to the public in a completely transparent and satisfactory manner.

Fenerbahce Beko competes with honor on the court; whether we win or lose, we respect the game and the performance of our opponents. However, this club cannot remain silent while our season-long efforts, the health of our players, and our sweat and labor are overshadowed by controversial decisions. In this series, the winner should be determined by athletic merit, not by whistles. The immense dedication of Fenerbahce Beko cannot be left at the mercy of arbitrary officiating.”

With Fener leading a best-of-five series 2–1, Game 4 follows in the Turkcell Basketball Development Center on Sunday.
