Roma SPQR has officially unveiled its inaugural roster and coaching staff, finalizing preparations for a historic dual debut in the BKT EuroCup and Italy’s top-tier LBA UnipolSai.
Born from the acquisition and relocation of the Vanoli Cremona sports license, this ambitious project represents a revival of elite basketball in the Italian capital, alongside another newly established club, Maxima Roma.
Spearheaded from its inception by former NBA executive Donnie Nelson, the venture boasts prominent financial and operational backing from current NBA superstar Luka Doncic alongside legendary Italian tactician Valerio Bianchini.
To navigate these grueling domestic and continental campaigns, the club has entrusted its sporting department to head coach Alessandro Magro. The franchise previously established its baseline by securing talented playmaker Nico Mannion, together with Gerald Ayayi and Jesse Edwards, as the first-ever signings in club history. This foundation was further reinforced by the marquee hiring of mastermind Sergio Scariolo, who brings immense international pedigree to the front office as a special advisor for basketball strategy.
Wednesday’s confirmation validated a wave of recent transfer market rumors. Arturs Strautins, Trentyn Flowers, Marko Simonovic, Andrea Mezzanotte, Giovanni Emejuru, and Giannis Odzebe were all formally added to the squad. This versatile group will share the hardwood with an influx of experienced talent that includes former NBA swingman Paul Watson, Corey Davis Jr., Erik Stevenson, and Mike Iuzzolino.
With the framework now securely in place, the team will formally launch operations on Thursday with the official opening of training camp. While the primary unit reports immediately, the roster is scheduled to be finalized sequentially over the coming days.
