Napoli has officially announced the mutual termination of its contract with head coach Alessandro Magro, clearing the path for the veteran strategist to take over the reins of the newly formed Roma SPQR.
The Naples-based organization publicly expressed its gratitude to the 43-year-old tactician for his dedication and professionalism during his tenure last year, offering him their best wishes for both his personal and career future.
This development allows Magro to become the inaugural bench boss for the ambitious capital franchise, as previewed by Backdoor Podcast earlier Monday. He is slated to lead Rome’s new squad through its debut in both the BKT EuroCup and Italy’s top-tier LBA UnipolSai during the upcoming 2026–27 campaign.
Interestingly, both clubs will balance domestic play with international ambitions, though they will navigate separate paths at the continental level. Napoli is set to compete in Group C of the Regular Season, whereas Roma has been drawn to play in Group D.
This shift also reunites Magro with Roma’s co-founder and executive partner Rimantas Kaukenas, with whom he previously collaborated at Wolves Twinsbet. Working alongside former NBA executive Donnie Nelson and Los Angeles Lakers Slovenian superstar Luka Doncic, the former player turned executive has been aggressively structuring the front office and player pool since the sporting license of Vanoli Cremona was relocated to the Italian capital earlier this offseason.
Similar to the coach’s hiring pending a final announcement, the roster awaits confirmations but is reportedly already rapidly taking shape. Doncic himself previously announced the marquee signing of 25-year-old Italian guard Nico Mannion, while an Italian Basketball Federation filing inadvertently revealed the addition of 23-year-old Giovanni Emejuru. They are expected to be joined by Jesse Edwards, Marko Simonovic, Andrea Mezzanotte, Gerald Ayayi, Arturs Strautins, Trentyn Flowers, and Olivier Hanlan, among others.
Roma’s first official tests will come quickly, with LBA and EuroCup openers scheduled for late September.
