Sergio Scariolo has joined BC Roma SPQR as Special Advisor for Basketball Strategy, bringing his extensive experience to the club’s newly launched sporting project.
The Italian coach will advise BC Roma on technical planning, youth development and the creation of a sustainable long-term model. His position will be strictly consultative, with head coach Alessandro Magro and his staff retaining full responsibility for the daily management of the first team.
“I’m pleased to contribute to a project that is focused not only on the team, but also on developing a broader basketball culture,” Scariolo said. “My role will be to make my experience and expertise available to BC Roma, contributing to discussions about technical development, the growth of young players and the construction of a sustainable model.”
BC Roma will compete in both the LBA Serie A and the BKT EuroCup during the 2026/27 season. The club is seeking to establish a modern, internationally oriented project capable of combining immediate competitiveness with steady development.
Scariolo will work alongside the ownership, management and basketball department. Roberto Carmenati will coordinate the project’s operations as sole administrator, while former NBA executive Donnie Nelson is the club’s majority shareholder. Valerio Bianchini will serve as honorary president and senior advisor.
The former Spain national team coach, currently a free agent following the end of his spell with Real Madrid, stressed that the new position does not represent a change in career direction.
“I am and remain a coach, and that continues to be my professional path,” he said. “At this stage, I have decided to dedicate part of my time to this initiative. I approach it with enthusiasm, also because of the friendships and relationships of respect and trust that have connected me with some of the people involved for many years.”
BC Roma will officially begin preparations for the new season on Thursday, August 20, when the team gathers at the Giulio Onesti Olympic Preparation Centre in Rome.
