Opening up on his historic 23rd NBA season, LeBron James addressed the enduring debate regarding his place alongside Michael Jordan in basketball history, emphasizing a deep-seated respect rather than a rivalry.

“I hope I made him proud at least, wearing that No. 23,” he told ESPN’s Dave McMenamin, acknowledging the shadow cast by the Bulls legend since his youth in Akron.

Despite the constant comparisons, the 41-year-old forward noted that he never measured himself against Jordan because their roles on the court were fundamentally different. Describing himself as a ‘point-forward’ who has always prioritized the pass, James contrasted his playstyle with Jordan’s scoring-first mentality, noting that while Jordan looked for the shot, they are both simply ‘great basketball players’ with distinct strengths.

His connection to MJ was fueled by childhood inspiration rather than a desire to replicate his exact path. He admitted that while he never thought he could be Jordan, he dreamed of the opportunity to live in the shoes of his idol, hitting game-winners as the clock expired, designing his own sneakers, and ‘flying through the air like him’.

As he maintains an elite level of production in the 2026 NBA Playoffs, presented by Google, James remains undecided on whether this journey will be his last in the league, leaving the final chapter of his storied career yet to be written.
