The Denver Nuggets have officially signed forward Cam Whitmore to a two-way contract, the team announced on Friday, ending recent rumors. The move highlights Denver’s current salary cap limitations, as the front office must get creative to add depth around Serbian superstar Nikola Jokic. Despite interest from the Los Angeles Lakers, the 22-year-old forward ultimately chose Colorado as his next landing spot and is already in town participating in workouts.
Whitmore is looking for a fresh start after a challenging stretch with the Washington Wizards. His 2025–26 campaign was cut short in December due to deep vein thrombosis in his right shoulder. When healthy, the former Villanova standout has shown immense promise. Since entering the league as the 20th overall pick in 2020, he has averaged 10.5 points and 3.3 rebounds over 119 career appearances split between Houston and Washington.
For the management, this signing is an ideal low-risk, high-reward move. It allows them to inject explosive young talent into the rotation without taking a hit on the salary cap or triggering luxury tax penalties. Furthermore, because it is a two-way designation, Denver retains exclusive control over his rights, preventing other franchises from poaching him off the roster.
However, the contract structure does come with strict operational boundaries. Whitmore can only be active for a maximum of 50 regular-season games with the team coached by David Adelman, spending the rest of his time developing with their G League affiliate. Additionally, he will be ineligible to suit up for the Playoffs unless Denver decides to convert his deal into a standard 15-man roster spot before the Regular Season comes to a close.
