The Sacramento Kings are intently exploring a blockbuster sign-and-trade deal centering on Lithuanian star Domantas Sabonis as NBA free agency officially gets underway on Tuesday.

Front office executives have packaged their three-time All-Star big as the centerpiece of a formal trade pitch because the franchise currently lacks the necessary salary-cap space to sign Detroit Pistons restricted free-agent center Jalen Duren outright. Insider reports on Monday revealed that the 22-year-old American center is disappointed with the initial extension offers presented by his current team. While the emerging star has expressed a strong personal desire to relocate to Northern California, Sabonis is also intrigued by the unique prospect of joining the Pistons roster, as noted by The Athletic’s Sam Amick.

This potential move follows a grueling 2025–26 Regular Season where the 30-year-old veteran suffered a torn left meniscus, ultimately undergoing season-ending knee surgery. Transitioning away from Sabonis allows Sacramento executives to pivot toward building a younger core alongside French center Maxime Raynaud and newly drafted rookie point guard Darius Acuff Jr.

However, significant structural hurdles remain before any formal deal can materialize. Detroit management remains reluctant to move their foundational young cornerstone, preferring to keep him long-term alongside Cade Cunningham, per ESPN’s Dave McMenamin. Furthermore, intense external competition complicates these negotiations, as rival franchises like the Los Angeles Lakers have already scheduled meetings with the restricted free agent.

Financial mechanics present another major obstacle for both front offices, given that Sabonis still has two years and 94 million dollars remaining on his current contract.
