Victor Wembanyama is back in San Antonio, quietly laying the groundwork for his fourth year in the NBA, according to a report by Maxime Aubin of L’Equipe on Thursday.
Fresh off a couple of appearances with France’s senior national team in the FIBA World Cup 2027 Qualifiers, the 22-year-old phenom is already immersed in an intensive training regimen. Despite the punishing late-summer heat and stifling humidity gripping the region, Wemby reportedly works out six of seven days each week, running practice sessions and scrimmaging alongside his teammates.
In the 2025–26 season, his dominant campaign led to Defensive Player of the Year honors, earned a second consecutive All-Star Game nod, and was headlined by a thrilling run to the NBA Finals 2026. Naturally, the stakes are even higher for the 2026–27 season. The Spurs are no longer just a rebuilding franchise. They enter this season as clear championship contenders.
Yet, rather than feeding into the media circus surrounding his five-year, $252 million max extension and expectations, Wembanyama is keeping a low profile. He has chosen a path of deliberate isolation. His routine since returning to the team’s facility has been strictly baseline-to-baseline, punctuated only by quiet dinners out with family and a single scheduled television appearance, as noted by Aubin.
With training camp right around the corner, several more European superstars have returned to their NBA bases. The Spurs are heading to a preseason opener against the Atlanta Hawks on October 8, and later tip off their 82-game regular-season schedule at home against the Oklahoma City Thunder on October 19.
