A major shift in European basketball could see the establishment of a brand-new regional league in the Middle East with the official backing of Euroleague Basketball.

According to a report by Meridian Sport’s Djordje Matic on Wednesday, this strategic expansion is driven by the immense interest of wealthy cities like Dubai, Abu Dhabi, and Doha to host top-tier basketball franchises. While Dubai’s current EuroLeague participation has already proven competitive, heavy travel schedules and potential regional turbulence make it impractical to simply add more Middle Eastern clubs directly into the traditional European circuit.

Instead, a dedicated outside tournament provides the perfect economic compromise. This structure secures the substantial financial support necessary to satisfy current EuroLeague participants and boost their financial future. This ambitious blueprint follows the 2026 EuroLeague Final Four in Athens, presented by Etihad. Beyond the action on the court, which saw Olympiacos crowned champion, the event faced heavy criticism for its less-than-ideal organization. These logistical shortcomings specifically included a major ticket collapse that directly affected supporters of Fenerbahce Beko.

The organizational issues in Greece stood in stark contrast to the flawless conditions witnessed during the prior year’s Final Four in Abu Dhabi. The Emirati capital delivered a top-notch experience for both fans and athletes, remaining central to the sport’s long-term international strategy. According to the standing multi-year agreement, Abu Dhabi is locked in to host the marquee season-ending tournament again in alternating years. Despite any broader regional challenges, local officials remain fully committed to hosting the Final Four championship weekend.
