European basketball legend Stojan Vrankovic has been elected as the president of the Croatian Basketball Federation.

As a player, Vrankovic had been one of the most prominent personalities of his country’s basketball scene and a multi-medalist on a national level with both Croatia and Yugoslavia.

“This is a big honor for me,” said Vrankovic. “I have been a player of the national team, a captain of the national team and now president of the federation. It’s a big honor and also a huge responsibility. Our objectives are to strengthen the major leagues, with work year by year. To invest in young people and to educate our coaches. Our goal is to continue the good cooperation with FIBA and ABA League. It will not be easy financially but we are working on a marketing plan for it.”

Vrankovic joins the… club of former basketball icons who are becoming presidents of their countries’ basketball federations. Arvydas Sabonis is head of the Lithuanian Basketball Federation, Andrei Kirilenko has the same post in Russia, Jorge Garbajosa in Spain and, most recently, Hedo Turkoglu was elected president of the Turkish basketball federation.
