The former back-to-back Basketball Champions League champions, Hereda San Pablo Burgos, finished a rocky season in the Spanish Liga Endesa at the bottom of the standings, meaning they got relegated to the second division.

After the loss to Fuenlabarda which sealed their fate, the president of the club Felix Sancho made a gesture by kneeling on the court and the players followed.

That move was viewed in different ways by the public but Sancho explained in a press conference that it was purely a gesture of apology towards the fans and nothing else.

“When what happens happens, it was important for me to apologize and I did it in the first person, to the fans. They are the ones who have followed us everywhere in this country, they have accompanied us around Europe, they are the engine of our club and for whom we have fought so hard,” he said and added.

“I was looking for a gesture of gratitude and forgiveness towards our fans. It hurts me a lot that an action in which that is sought is taken out of context and the complete opposite is shown. Yesterday I took it upon myself to call the captains of the squad to ask them if at any time they had felt that I had asked them for something out of the ordinary. I spoke with two captains and both understood the gesture. The only thing I want to clarify is that I was looking to apologize to our fans, who are what really matters.”

Sancho also stressed that there is only one objective going forward and that is to return to the elite rank in Spain.

“There is no other objective than to go up to ACB, knowing the difficulty of going down to LEB Oro for a year and having to go back up.
