Gran Canaria officially parted ways with head coach Porfi Isaac and will be hiring Jaka Lakovic to fill the position, according to Eurohoops sources. There’s already an agreement between the two sides and the deal is expected to be announced soon.

Lakovic will be back in the Spanish ACB after stints with Joventut Badalona and Bilbao as both head coach and assistant. In 2019, the 43-year-old Slovenian coach and former player took over the helm of Ratiopharm Ulm in Germany and last season he led the German side to the EuroCup quarterfinals by eliminating top-placed Badalona.

Gran Canaria finished eighth in the 2021 ACB and lost to Barcelona in the first round of the playoffs while also making it as far as the Top 8 in EuroCup. With Lakovic on board, the Spanish team will look to remain at a very high competitive level in both Spain and Europe.

Spanish web Encestando first reported the interest of Gran Canaria for Lakovic.
