Real Madrid forward/center Gustavo Ayon has acquired Spanish citizenship. The 33-year-old Mexican big can now compete in the Spanish ACB League without occupying a foreign player’s spot on the roster of his team.

This allows Real Madrid head coach Pablo Laso to use Ayon plus both American forward Trey Thompkins and Argentian forward Gabriel Deck in ACB games, the only remaining “foreign players” of the “Blancos”. Per ACB rules, a “foreign player” is someone who doesn’t have a European or Cotonou passport.

Ayon has been playing with Real Madrid since 2014. In his four years with the team, he has helped them win two EuroLeague titles (2015, 2018), three ACB titles (2016, 2017, 2018) and three Copa Del Rey titles (2015, 2016, 2017).
