For precautionary reasons, five clubs playing in the German League first division have submitted license requests for the second division while one club applied for both the Second and third division licenses, according to David Hein.
This is without a doubt a measure taken as a safety net in case the clubs aren’t able to recover from the budget hit taken due to the stoppage of all sports activities after the coronavirus outbreak.
Many teams imposed salary cuts including Brose Bamberg which internally agreed on 50% while others wait for an official agreement between the EuroLeague and the players association. Bayern GM Marko Pesic noted that the German powerhouse is looking at a seven-figure loss from ticket revenues alone.
The league has been suspended until April 30 and that is also the date when the clubs will meet once again to discuss the ongoing situation and future steps. The initial mindset was to end the 2019-20 season at a later date, possibly with a shortened schedule.
