Alba Berlin’s Johannes Thiemann scored a free throw with 11 seconds for the win against Bayern Munich, as Cassius Winston couldn’t respond

After a true rollercoaster, 40 minutes of a great battle, and a thriller-like finish, Alba Berlin took down Bayern Munich in the German derby 80-79.

Johannes Thiemann scored just his second free throw with 11 seconds to go and gave Alba a minimum lead, but Cassius Winston couldn’t convert the layup for the win with the buzzer, so the guests took a W in Munich.

Thiemann was the top scorer of the winning side with 14 points, while Jaleen Smith added 13.

Ben Lammers followed the duo with 12 points, while Luke Sikma added 10.

Winston led Bayern with 20 points, Nick Weiler-Babb added 16, and Elias Harris scored 12 with six rebounds.

Bayern opened the game with a 10-2 run and soon grabbed a 19-9 lead, but Alba answered and got within two points, but Andrea Trinchieri’s team stayed in front before the first break (27-23).

Alba pushed hard in the second period but couldn’t turn the score around. Still, the Berlin team managed to tie the score at halftime.

Finally, the guest took the lead in the third period but couldn’t get more than a five-point surplus. Eventually, they had a 64-61 lead before the final break.

After a rollercoaster in the last 10 minutes, it all went into a final few possessions, as Bayern decided to foul at 79-79 with 11 seconds on the clock to have the ball in their hands for the last attack. After Thiemann converted just a second free throw, Winston tried to win the game for the hosts but couldn’t convert, facing the Ben Lammers at the buzzer.

As for other results, ratiopharm Ulm defeated Veolia Towers Hamburg 80-65 on the road, and the Hamburg team responded with a coaching change.
