Spain survived the nail-biter opposite Germany with Rudy Fernandez proudly connecting the previous generation to the current squad.

“This jersey. This family,” he said replying to a question about what is the secret for Spain to relentlessly extend winning ways into the new set of players at the disposal of prosperous tactician Sergio Scariolo, “I can’t describe how I feel now with this group. I am so proud to play in this tournament with this family.”

Guided by Scariolo, Spain went from the top seed in Group A behind four wins in five games to eliminating Lithuania in overtime, knocking out Finland in the Quarterfinals, and now bumping out host Germany in the Semifinals. Up next is France Sunday night. Contributing 7.7 points, 2.4 rebounds, and 1.7 assists per contest paint the picture for Fernandez so far.

“In the end, we played good defense, pushing them out of their comfort zone,” he added regarding the win versus Germany, “We are already guaranteed a medal. I remember everyone counting us out going into the Round of 16. Now, we just have to have fun and enjoy the game. France is a great team, so we will enjoy one more final.”

Fernandez, 37, has been on the winning end of multiple triumphs at the international level with La Familia. From ten medals in major FIBA tournaments, including a couple of World Cup gold medals, he is back for more following the retirement of greats the likes of Pau and Marc Gasol, and Sergio Rodriguez. Injured Ricky Rubio and Sergio Llull were also sidelined for 2022 EuroBasket as younger emerging stars jumped into the team.

New-look Spain exceeding expectations will battle it out with France for the gold medals in Berlin’s Mercedes-Benz Arena. The experienced Real Madrid swingman will be present looking to capture gold in EuroBasket for the fourth time in his career.
