Pau Gasol became the leading scorer in the history of the EuroBasket, a milestone that confirms his place as one of the best ever to play the game.

“First of all, I’m happy and thankful to be able to do something outstanding”, said Gasol. “It means I have great coaches, have been part of great teams and this is something I’m thankful for. We’re here to win championships and medals and this is our goal. To continue to move forward and get closer to our goal. This is nice but we have come here to win the EuroBasket title and this is what we have to do moving forward.”

The 37-year old star was asked if he has a message to send to Tony Parker, the 2nd leading All time scorer. “Not really a message to Tony”, said Gasol. “Tony and Dirk are some of the greatest to play in international basketball. It is really great to be in that elite group with them. It is an honor and I’m really proud”.

Coach Scariolo was also asked to comment on Pau Gasol, his scoring record and his approach on the game. “First of all congratulations to Pau”, said the Italian coach of the Spanish national team. “It has been an honor and learning process to coach him in many championships. Everyone learns from his approach to the game, his professionalism, his ability to be a team player. Overall I’m really proud and delighted to accompany Pau in this event. We qualify for the next round and keep on fighting. Today we regroup and wait on our next opponent for Sunday.”

Pau Gasol and Spain will either play Latvia or Turkey in the Top-16 coming this Sunday.
