Stellar Marc Gasol leads Spain to semifinals

It took almost three quarters to Spain to turn the tables in its favour and advance to the semifinals of EuroBasket.

Spain is the first semifinalist of this year’s EuroBasket, after being Germany with 84-72. For the Spanish squad, this marks their 10th straight semifinal!

11-2 run for Germany and Gasol’s dominance: Fleming’s squad had a hold of the game in the opening quarter, which combined with Spain’s inefficient shooting led to a 11-2 score midway through, yet Pau Gasol took charge, as his team reduced to 19-16 at 10′.

Spain ties the score, puts the pressure on Germany: Scariolo’s squad pulled out a few important defensive plays and got the lead for the first time (27-30). Schroder made it a one-point game at halftime, 33-34.

Τougher Germany, 3-point bombs for Spain: The German NT took advantage of Spain’s open space and turned it into score to get the lead once again in the game (45-43 at 25′). With two long range shots, Spain got the advantage again with 56-50. By the end of the period, the “Rojas” led 65-53.

A deficit that could not be covered in the final period: One more 3-pointer, this time by Sergio Rodriguez (9 pts), practically ended the game with 3 minutes left, 79-62.

Key players: Along with Marc, Pau was the key in the first half and he finished with 19 points.

For Germany, Dennis Schroder tapped 27 points along with 8 assists.
