In his official presentation by Virtus Segafredo Bologna to media representatives, Tornike Shengelia discussed the decision to join the Italian club after leaving CSKA Moscow.

“I share the same goals with the team,” he noted confirming winning the 7DAYS EuroCup and qualifying to Turkish Airlines EuroLeague, and retaining the domestic title in Italy’s LBA Serie A as the targets, “I want to bring energy and experience, and for all of us to work together aiming to win without considering personal goals. For me, this is a great opportunity, joining an ambitious team built to win.”

“It is widely accepted that many EuroCup teams play at a high level and would be able to perform well in EuroLeague as well. This team is one of them,” he added replying to a separate question, “I have seen games. I am convinced the team can compete at a higher level.”

He declared himself ready to play against Cedevita Olimpija at home in EuroCup Regular Season Round 15 action Wednesday. His new side sits fourth in Group B behind an 8-6 record while carrying a 17-3 W-L tally and ranking second one game behind AX Armani Exchange Milan at the domestic level.

Shengelia, 30, opted to leave CSKA Moscow after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. After becoming a free agent, he inked a contract for the rest of the season with Virtus Bologna.

“I would not say it was a difficult situation for me,” he explained, “The real difficulties are in other parts of the world.”

Daniel Hackett moved from CSKA to the Bologna club as well. Shengelia talked with him and head coach Sergio Scariolo before deciding to join Virtus Bologna.

“Everything happened so fast,” he said, “I took the time to figure out what is better for both myself and my family.”
