Andorra upsets Gran Canaria to move to semifinals

Another regular season leader gets eliminated before the semifinal stage in EuroCup.

Morabanc Andorra came back from down 10 in the fourth quarter to defeat Gran Canaria 79 – 77 on the road in an All-Spanish clash of the EuroCup quarterfinals. Andorra will be facing the winner of Cedevita Olimpija – Bursaspor for a spot in the championship game.

Gran Canaria, on the other hand, is exiting EuroCup early after finishing the regular season at the top of Group B. Both regular season leaders are now out of the competition since Group A boss Joventut Badalona was eliminated in the eighthfinals.

Clevin Hannah was the man of the hour for Andorra down the stretch. With the score 77 – 74 and two minutes to play, he drained three free throws to tie the score and then made another pair for the 77 – 79.

Hannah then draw a key charge from Nicolas Brussino with 29 seconds remaining when the latter tried to attack the basket in the transition while two of his teammates were wide open near him. Gran Canaria had a chance to tie or win the game after a missed jumper by Hannah but AJ Slaughter’s 3-pointer went off target.

While Hannah completed the game with 15 points, Codi Miller-McIntyre had 17 points plus nine assists and David Jelinek dropped 17 points, shooting 5-7 from the 3-point line.

Artem Pustovyii had 12 points plus five rebounds for Gran Canaria. Brussino scored 11.
