The Canadian explained his move to Italy and said NBA Europe played no part in his decision

Kelly Olynyk described his move to BC Roma as the perfect opportunity for himself and his family as he was officially introduced to the media, two days after scoring 15 points against Balkan Botevgrad in his EuroCup debut.

After 13 seasons in the NBA, the Canadian felt the time was right for a new chapter.

“I played 13 years in the NBA. It was time to make room for the young guys. It was the right time to come here. When the opportunity to come to Rome arose, we thought it was perfect.”

His family’s affection for Italy also helped make the decision an easy one.

“It’s a great opportunity, at a great club and in a great city. Above all, it’s an opportunity for me and my family, who love Italy and Europe. I’m really excited to be here.”

Olynyk dismissed the suggestion that the prospect of NBA Europe had influenced his move.

“No. Obviously, if it happens, it will be fantastic, but that’s not why I’m here. Right now, we’re focused on the Italian league and the EuroCup. We want to do our best and win as many games as possible.”

The veteran praised head coach Alessandro Magro while acknowledging that a new roster would need time to fully absorb his system.

“The more games we play and the more practices we have, the more we’ll improve. But I like the way he thinks and the way he coaches.”

Olynyk also revealed a personal reason behind his choice of jersey number: he selected No. 22 in honor of his daughter, who was born on September 22.
