Thanks to a 21-9 run at the start of the second half, KIROLBET Baskonia Vitoria Gasteiz got the 79-65 home win over LDLC ASVEL.

Tornike Shengelia, with 15 points and nine rebounds, was the top scorer of the winners against the guests who were more than competitive, at least in the first half.

However, Baskonia kept its distance in the second half and got substantial help by newcomers Zoran Dragic who scored 12 points and Semaj Christon, who had a double-double with 11 points and 11 assists.  Shavon Shields also scored 12 points.

Despite a 20-13 start in the first quarter for the hosts, ASVEL trailed by two at halftime (39-37). But after a strong third quarter, in which they led by 60-46, Baskonia entered the last period leading 62-51.

ASVEL managed to make it a seven-point game (62-55). Still, that was the best they could do. A 13-2 run gave to Baskonia a solid lead (75-57) and the win. Adreian Payne, with 16 points, was the only scorer in double-digits for the guests who are now tied with Baskonia at a 9-15 record.

NBA prospect Theo Maledon had nine points, three assists, and two turnovers for the losing side.

“We needed this win”

Baskonia coach Dusko Ivanovic was happy from the defensive effort of his team: “We had a very serious game, especially on defense. I think we had patience in offense and played a little bit slowly, but I think we did much better than in games before. This team will fight for every game.”

Semaj Christon added: “It feels good. I think we had some good luck tonight. We needed it, though, it was a big win for us just to keep our energy up and keep thinking that we can win games. Our fight tonight gave us more energy and we got the win. As I said, we needed it. Every game we have is to put us in the right position for the playoffs, just to compete. Every game, we are trying to win a game and the most two [home] games are very important.”
