Monaco made a historic move by acquiring the four-time NBA All-star and 12-year NBA veteran Kemba Walker.

The 33-year-old point guard has become one of the best players ever to transition from the NBA to Europe, and he is ready for the challenges that lie ahead.

The club was very interested in me, and I just wanted to be part of a club that wanted me, that believed in me. I saw that the directors felt I could help them reach another level. That’s what convinced me and made me decide to join Monaco. What’s more, it’s an extraordinary city where I want to spend some time and gain new life experiences. So it’s going to be a really fun time, and I’m looking forward to the opportunity. I just want to keep playing basketball at a high level, and Monaco allows me to do that“, Kemba Walker said for the club’s website in his first interview upon signing for Monaco.

He did his homework and tried to learn about the club as much as possible.

Since we’ve been in contact, I’ve done as much research as I can. I inquired about the team, and I suddenly learned how the previous season had gone. I know these guys have come a long way, and I hope to take them to the next level. To take another step forward.

Walker was among the Nike athletes that Michael Jordan took to Monaco a few years ago.

I remember the beauty of the city, and I had a great time there. I did some shopping and visited amazing hotels. Everyone was super friendly and welcoming. I can’t wait to do it again and get to know the people here in Monaco. So, I’m very excited about this idea.

He’s not that familiar with his new teammates but is assured they’ll have a good time in Monaco.

Not many, to be honest. I know some through basketball, but not personally. Mike James, for example, I can’t say I know him, but we might have crossed paths once or twice. I’m looking forward to really meeting the rest of the guys, getting to know them as teammates, and competing with the best. I think we’re going to have a good time.”

Of course, he’s aware of Mike James’ qualities and considers Alpha Diallo and Donta Hall very good players.

We all know how special of a player he is. I love his playing style and his creativity. He has an immense passion for the game, and it shows. I think he has great confidence in himself, and I’m excited to be on the court with him. It’s going to be a lot of fun. And to name a few others, I can talk about Alpha Diallo, whom I consider a very good player, and also Donta Hall.

Former Olimpia Milano, and from this summer, Crvena Zvezda‘s point guard, Shabazz Napier, talked to Walker about EuroLeague. They played together at Uconn and won the NCAA championship in 2011.

Yes, and I totally agree with that. I’ve only heard good things about the Euroleague. I have many friends who play in this competition. One of my former college teammates and one of my closest friends, Shabazz Napier, gave me a lot of advice to make this decision, which helped me feel good about this situation. I thank him. Not to mention my childhood and high school friends. As for the Euroleague, I know a lot of players who have played overseas, and they’ve all had positive feedback about this competition. I can’t wait to compete, and it’s going to be an extraordinary moment.

In recent years he had many troubles with knee injuries, last season played only nine games, but Monaco decided to bet on his proven talents despite that.

It was not easy; “difficult” is too weak to describe what I felt. It was really tough for me. But I want to leave those difficult years behind me. That’s why I keep working and training relentlessly. As I’ve already said, I love this game so much that I don’t want to give it up just yet. I don’t think my time is up yet. I want to continue until I can’t anymore. Have fun, enjoy it, and be surrounded by great people. I’m looking forward to this opportunity in Monaco, and I want to help build something.”

His goals with Monaco are quite straightforward, and he assures he’ll do everything in his power to help the team.

I just want to win. Win, win, and have fun doing it. I want to share my experience with the guys and the team as much as possible. I’m willing to help 100% and in every way possible. I’m ready to do whatever my team needs from me. It’s something that we’ll need to discuss in more detail at some point. But literally, whatever my teammates need me to do, I’m ready to do it. I want to enjoy playing basketball every night, and be highly competitive, and I know that’s the case in the Euroleague. I know it’s tough with brave and determined opponents. That’s how I want to be on the court, competing against the best.

Is returning to the NBA on his mind?

I’m not certain. I mean, the NBA is obviously the main goal, but I’ve played there for many years. For now, I’m solely focused on my new adventure, this experience that awaits me with the new life I’m going to have. I’m so excited and eager to seize this opportunity in Monaco. I can’t wait to explore the city and meet the people, my teammates, the staff, and everything surrounding the club. We’re going to have some great moments. Can’t wait for it to begin,” Kemba Walker concluded in his first interview as a Monaco player.
