The Union of EuroLeague Basketball Officials, on behalf of EuroLeague Referees, issued a press release regarding a planned expansion of NBA in Europe.
Reacting to the NBA Europe project, UEBO confirmed commitment to the competition of Euroleague Basketball.
Per the press release: “The Union of EuroLeague Basketball Officials (UEBO) reaffirms its unwavering commitment to the EuroLeague and EuroCup competitions — the flagship platforms of European basketball. For over two decades, these leagues have elevated the sport across the continent, showcasing elite talent, homegrown development, and a model that commands global respect.
As referees, we are not just participants — we are guardians of the game’s integrity. And today, we speak out in defense of a system that has delivered excellence, unity, and growth for European basketball.
In light of recent developments — including the NBA’s growing interest in establishing a permanent presence in Europe — we emphasize the need to protect the structure, values, and identity of the European game. This is not a call to resist progress, but a call to ensure that any evolution respects the foundation on which European basketball has been built.
We stand in full solidarity with the EuroLeague Players’ Association (ELPA) and the EuroLeague Head Coaches Board (EHCB). Their efforts to protect the rights, welfare, and dignity of their members are not only valid — they are critical to the sport’s continued growth and credibility.
Despite facing exclusion from FIBA competitions for nearly a decade, EuroLeague referees have remained the gold standard in global officiating. We have continued to serve the game at the highest level and remain committed to its future.
UEBO believes that the strength of European basketball lies in collaboration — not division. Any attempt to undermine the ecosystem that has driven success for clubs, players, coaches, and officials alike threatens the stability and integrity of the sport.
We will continue to do our part — upholding the highest standards on the court and advocating for fairness and respect. EuroLeague and EuroCup deserve nothing less.”
