Deon Thompson has officially closed the chapter on his extensive 16-year professional playing career and is expected to return to North Carolina as a graduate assistant coach under head coach Michael Malone. The former Tar Heel forward was a vital starting piece of UNC’s legendary 2009 NCAA championship team.

The California native established himself as an elite international journeyman, logging 107 Turkish Airlines EuroLeague appearances and capturing domestic league championships in several European countries while playing for 22 teams across 14 countries. He also extended his impact to the international stage by representing the Cote d’Ivoire in several international tournaments, including the FIBA World Cup 2019.

Following his final professional stint in Indonesia, Thompson announced his retirement from playing on Monday.

“After 16 years, 22 teams, and 14 countries, it’s time for me to say goodbye to playing the game that I love and that has given me so much. The game has given me so many unforgettable moments and memories, along with incredible people. To my teammates, coaches, fans, and all the great friends I made along the way, I say, “Thank you.” The impact you have had on my life and journey will never be forgotten.

To my wife, thank you for being by my side through it all. Thank you for supporting me, embracing the journey, and making the most of every opportunity and every stop along the way. You made this experience so much more special because we did it together.

Most importantly, I thank God for this blessing and being able to see the world while doing what I love and sharing it with the people I love most. His hand has been on my journey, and as He continues to lead, I will continue to follow.

I am excited for the next chapter, and where the game takes me next!”
