Virtus Bologna’s elimination in the league semifinals, after falling to Venezia, has brought an end to a season to forget and marks the beginning of a profound restructuring at the Italian club. The sporting management is preparing a summer of significant changes to both the roster and the coaching staff, with the aim of relaunching the project for next season, and a new leader has already been chosen.
Álex Mumbrú has been announced as the new head coach of the Italian team. After Dusko Ivanovic’s departure mid-season, the team was left in the hands of Nenad Jakovljevic as interim coach to finish the season, but Virtus has decided to invest in an elite coach like the Spanish manager.
Mumbrú, who won the last EuroBasket with the German national team, will continue to lead Germany while also taking on his duties at Virtus, the team with which he will return to the EuroLeague after his time with Valencia Basket.
In this way, the Catalan coach will return to the sidelines of a top-level club while also taking charge of a national team, a combination that he already told Eurohoops was ideal: “It’s good that coaches can combine both whenever possible.”
